A MAC and PHY Cross-Layer Analytical Model for the Goodput and Delay of IEEE 802.11a Networks Operating Under Basic Access and RTS/CTS DCF Schemes

چکیده
We have developed a theoretical cross-layer model that allows assessing the goodput and delay of IEEE 802.11 local area networks (WLANs) operating simultaneously under the distributed coordination function (DCF) basic access (BA) and request-to-send/clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) medium access control (MAC) protocols under saturated traffic over correlated fading channels. A comparison between numerical and simulation results is carried out assuming the IEEE 802.11a PHY layer. Index Terms 802.11, Cross-layer, Goodput, Delay, Fading.

A MAC and Physical Layer Theoretical Model for IEEE 802.11a Networks Operating Simultaneously with Basic and RTS/CTS Access Schemes

متن کاملPerformance Analysis of DCF Access Schemes over IEEE 802.11A Physical Layer
IEEE 802.11a is one of the latest standards to be released by the IEEE Project 802. It has specified a new physical layer (PHY) to support higher data rates, known as the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). One of the medium access approaches adopted in the IEEE 802.11 specification is called distributed coordination function (DCF). DCF is a carrier sense multiple access with col...
متن کاملAnalytical Analysis of Applying Packet Fragmentation Mechanism on Both Basic and RTS/CTS Access Methods of the IEEE 802.11b DCF Network Under Imperfect Channel and Finite Load Conditions
The mathematical modeling and performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 network in all its various extensions (802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11e, 802.11n, etc.) have already been widely explored over the past years. However, the Packet Fragmentation Mechanism (PFM), which is proposed by the IEEE work group to enhance the MAC sub-layer of the IEEE 802.11 standard in an error-prone channel, has ...
متن کاملIEEE 802.11 WLANs: Performance analysis in presence of bit errors
IEEE 802.11 is worldwide established and the most used protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). As the assumption of an error-free channel is not always true in a realistic environment, we extent a mathematical model previously presented in the literature that calculates IEEE 802.11 DCF performance to take into account transmission errors for the IEEE 802.11a protocol. Our results tak...
متن کاملGoodput Enhancement of IEEE 802.lla Wireless LAN via Link Adaptation
Abstrucr-IEEE 802.11a is a new high-speed physical layer (PHY) defined for the 5 GHz U-NI1 hands as a supplement to the existing IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) standard. In this paper, we give an overview of the IEEE 802.11a Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiplexing (OFDM) PHY with eight different PHY rates as well as the distributed coordination function (DCF) of the IEEE 802.11 MAC, then deri...
